Food and clothing drive to help earthquake victims ends.

Food and clothing drive to help earthquake victims begins

Food and Clothing Drive

The people of Haiti suffered from a 6.1 aftershock last night.  To help the earthquake victims with the basics MWS will have a FOOD and CLOTHES DRIVE starting tomorrow, Thursday, January 21, 2010.  Your donations on nonperishable canned or boxed items will help the people in need in Haiti.  All Clothes should be cleaned and labeled with sizes in a bag so it is easy to organize.  (For example: Infant 3-6 months, or Girl 5, Boy 7 years, etc.)

redcrosslogo Your child can place his/her donation in the “donation box” until next Friday, January 29, 2010.  The children of the Picasso class will count, organize, sort and store the items.  By next Friday afternoon, we will deliver the items to the Red Cross so they can ship it to Haiti.

For other ways to donate or offer assistance visit the American Red Cross website.

Thank you in advance for your kind and generous contribution!

Earthquake Experiment

DSC08912 Due to the recent and tragic earthquake in Haiti the media has been full of information about the event and the students couldn’t help but hear some bit of news about it.  Many of the students were left with questions such as; “What is an earthquake?”  “Why do we have earthquakes” “Can we have an earthquake here?”

The teachers in the Monet and Van Gogh classrooms teamed up to help answer some of these questions in the only way possible…the Montessori Way.  Aided with information from the book “Planet Earth / Inside Out” by Gail Gibbons, Mrs. Kaufman explained how the earth is made up and what makes an earthquake possible.  DSC08913

The lesson was reinforced by a red (or pink in this case) pudding representing the molten within the earth’s crust and graham crackers representing the plates of the earth.

The students listened intently to this explanation of earthquakes and their cause but probably best of all each student enjoyed a tasty treat as well!  DSC08916 Thank you teachers for using such a creative way to help these students (our children) better understand such a complex issue.  If parents are now curious about how earthquakes occur there is information on the Worldwide Web about the cause of earthquakes including on the Wikipedia site.
