• Lowes Home and Garden offers free clinics for children called: Lowes Build and Grow.  This Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 10 am to 11 am will be: Back to School Event: Building a School Bus.  Another workshop will be held September 11, 2010, from 10am to 11am.  This workshop will teach how to build a Pet Leash Hanger.  You must RSVP online to participate: http://lowesbuildandgrow.com

• Hunters Creek Soccer Club will be holding its final opportunity to walk-in register for the Fall 2010 Soccer season.  The registration will be held this Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Cristpers in Hunters Creek.  If you wish to pay registration fees with a credit card you must register on line at: www.hunterscreeksoccer.net.

I hope you all have received your new uniforms and are happy with them.  The supplier ran out of the jerzees brand on a few sizes so some of you got an upgraded shirt (port authority) at no extra charge.  There are a few remaining items still to come in and I will be in touch as soon as I have them.  If your order is not complete or if sizes are not correct, please contact me and I will try to accommodate.  I can not promise any size switches as our stock is limited but we will do our best.

Some of you have inquired about bringing me items to be embroidered (such as girls jumper or dress).  I can have these items embroidered with our remaining items in the next 2 weeks.  The price is $5 per piece and will need to be paid when you send in your items.  If you have something that you would like embroidered, please place it in a marked ziploc bag and leave with Mrs. V prior to 8/31/2010 along with your check. 

Also, Mrs. Kaufman asked about hats for the children.  She is going to select an appropriate style for both girls and boys and we will make that available for order in the next week or so.  Stay tuned for more details on that.  In the colder months, it is nice to have a hat for your children when they are on the playground.  This is completely optional but if anyone is interested, we will get you the details soon.

Another large school order will be placed prior to January but if you forgot to order a field trip t-shirt for yourself or your child (remember all parents need them for field trip days and kids can wear them on Friday’s) or if you didn’t think about getting a sweatshirt for your child because it is still 95 degrees outside, you still have a chance, please respond to this email with your order and we will get it filled in the next 2 weeks.

Monday marked the first day of school 2010 for Montessori Way School.  There was a lot of activity with dropping off, learning new routines and getting back together with friends.  There was a mix of happiness combined with a few tears (perhaps more than a few of those were from parents?).

All in all it was a good start to what promises to be a good year. 

Just a reminder to parents about the drop off/ pick up policy.  Please pull up to the curb that is adjacent to the breezeway and the faculty will unload/load your child for you.  At this time you will sign your child in or out with the clipboard provided.  This allows for a smoother transition for children arriving to school and less confusion within the building.

Kermit the Frog had it all wrong.  It is easy bein’ green and you can raise green for the school too!  You may have noticed by now a big green and yellow recycling bin near the dumpster at Montessori Way School.  This has been placed here in an effort to not only become more earth conscious but also to help raise funds for the school.  So, all those extra papers you have been trying to rid yourself of have a place; IN THE BIN!  Just bring your papers anytime during the week; such as while your waiting for the pick-up line in the afternoon or perhaps while dropping off in the afternoon. Once the container is completely full the company will arrive and weigh it and MWS will receive a percentage of the proceeds, then we start all over again.   See?  Easy.

There is just one simple rule though.  This is a bin for clean paper recycling only, in other words no food containers such as pizza boxes. 

Here are some items that CAN go in the bin:

Newspapers, magazines, office papers, school papers, mail and catalogs

Here are the items that CANNOT go in the bin:

Plastic, glass, metals and trash.

So, with the slightest effort in sorting we can all easily become a bit greener while helping Montessori Way School at the same time.  Green looks so good on you!

Since then, it has become a tradition at our School to walk for CF (Cystic Fibrosis). Each year, our children, our staff and our parents participate in a walk-a-thon for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is non-profit. We have raised thousands of dollars every year. Last year, Team Lauren raised over 5,000 dollars. Our School alone raised three thousand, three hundred and thirty seven dollars! Lauren is not in our school this year, but we still want to continue with our commitment until the research is complete and a cure is found.

Touch Star Cinemas and BJ’s Restaurant are sponsoring our walk for the third year in a row, thank you! This year’s event will unfold as follows: On Friday, June 4, we will walk from our School to the South Chase Theatres. After our walk, we will enjoy a newly released kids movie. Finally, we shall have a short ceremony and a pizza lunch back at our School. 

BJ’s Brew House Inc is a major sponsor of this event. They agreed to continue pledging their matching funds up to $2,000.00 ($1,000 going to the CF Foundation, the other to our School). Other schools have caught wind of the success of this fundraiser, and now BJ’s has had to limit the number of matching grants.  It will be given to the first 40 schools nationwide that can raise $1,000.  The CF Foundation is urging us to send in the funds ASAP, so our chance at winning the $1,000.00 BJ’s donation and the pizza party is higher.

Therefore, we are asking you to send in your donations no later than April 5, 2010.

Your child can place his/her donation in the “donation box” until next Friday, January 29, 2010.  The children of the Picasso class will count, organize, sort and store the items.  By next Friday afternoon, we will deliver the items to the Red Cross so they can ship it to Haiti.

The teachers in the Monet and Van Gogh classrooms teamed up to help answer some of these questions in the only way possible…the Montessori Way.  Aided with information from the book “Planet Earth / Inside Out” by Gail Gibbons, Mrs. Kaufman explained how the earth is made up and what makes an earthquake possible. 

The lesson was reinforced by a red (or pink in this case) pudding representing the molten within the earth’s crust and graham crackers representing the plates of the earth.  

The students listened intently to this explanation of earthquakes and their cause but probably best of all each student enjoyed a tasty treat as well!  Thank you teachers for using such a creative way to help these students (our children) better understand such a complex issue.  If parents are now curious about how earthquakes occur there is information on the Worldwide Web about the cause of earthquakes including on the Wikipedia site.
